Over the past few weeks, students have been designing and building toys that rely on moving parts to be functional. They are encouraged to consider their design against the stated purpose and make design adjustments after testing. They use various materials and consider which materials might best serve the design. The challenge in one lesson was to use Lego to make a Zip Line carriage to safely rescue Lego people by transporting them across the room to the safe zone.
After watching engaging multi-media presentations that expand on fundamental design elements, the students then make and create their own designs and get to test them.
The students worked well together and gave each other ideas and suggestions. No two designs were the same, each with their own pros and cons. Students considered the strengths and weaknesses of their designs and brain-stormed ideas on how they could improve them.
Many other skills are developed along the way. These include giving and receiving feedback, and working safely and respectfully with others. They also learn that it is okay to fail, have a laugh, and try again.
