Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been exciting to welcome 3 new students to our school this term. Layton has started in Early Years with Miss Lynne’s class, Mason started this week with Mr Dale in Primary, and next week we welcome Ruby to one of our Senior Secondary classes. A huge welcome to our new students and their families as they join the Gympie Special School community. As I mentioned in our last newsletter, we are getting regular enrolment queries at the moment. It is a testament to the hard work and gains the school has made with communication, literacy, numeracy and behaviour over the past few years that we have so much interest from families.
After walking around our school over the past few weeks, I have been impressed with the overall behaviour and engagement of our students. As a staff, we have been focussing on transitioning as part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) around the school and we will continue to focus on how our students transition for the rest of this term. We have made some changes in how we pack up at the end of a play time, how students move from one area to another and how we stop doing one activity before moving to another. I have been impressed with how quickly most of our students are adjusting to these small changes to make our school a safer place.
Thank you so much to those families who have started sending in some donations for our CENT SALE on Saturday 6th November. If you have any suitable donations, please drop these into our office. We need approximately 200 prizes for the Cent Sale to be a success. Children’s toys, household items, grocery items, decorative items, Gift vouchers – any new and unused items will be welcomed as donations. If any businesses would like to donate a prize, please let us know.
I will be on sick leave from Thursday 26th August to Monday 13th September as I require some surgery. Rachael Pelling will be Acting Principal and Shellie Pursey will be Acting Deputy Principal during this time.
Last week we received the sad news that one of our students had passed away. On Monday, some of our staff were able to join Harris’ family in celebrating his life and farewelling him at his funeral. Our thoughts and prayers go to his family. If any of our students require any support and someone to talk to, please do not hesitate to let us know so we can organise this.
Moving forward, learning together,
Sarah Lester - Principal
Good afternoon Gympie Special School families and friends.
Welcome to Term 4! Term 4 is always a busy term with assessment and reporting, end of year celebrations, Awards night, Year 6 and Year 12 Graduations and PBL Rewards day. In addition, we have our Splash and Dash Fun Run this Friday, 29th October, on Daniel Morecombe Day which is also World Teacher’s Day. Every family should now have a term calendar with all of our events listed. If you haven’t received yours, please email the office for a copy of your child’s sector calendar for Term 4.
I would like to send out a huge “THANK YOU” to Miss Rachael who was Acting Principal and to Miss Shellie for stepping into the Acting Deputy Principal role during weeks 1 and 2 this term while I was on long service leave. They did a great job during my absence.
We are moving to 3 Sports Houses in 2022 and renaming the houses. We will be making some decisions shortly about our Sports Houses names and are asking our staff, students and families to think about the names and the colours of our 3 Sports Houses and support us making these decisions as a school community. If you have any suggestions for the 3 Sports Houses for Gympie Special School please email them to admin@gympiespecs.eq.edu.au.
In week 9, on Friday 3rd December, we are having our second Whole School PBL Rewards Day! This is very exciting and the PBL team has been very busy planning and organising the 4-hour event. We have having a water-based theme with a giant wet slide as well as organising many other fantastic activities to celebrate the wonderful behaviour our students have demonstrated this year.
Our students and staff will be very focussed over the next few weeks on gathering evidence and information to share in our report cards which will come home at the end of this term. There are plenty of things to celebrate in our students report cards- things we can check and measure and give a rating to. Some things though, are difficult to measure but are obvious within a busy, engaged classroom. As always, we are excited to share the work that is happening across classrooms and as reporting draws closer, we look forward to celebrating student achievements with you.
It’s also the time of year when parents, students and staff start thinking about next year and class groupings for 2022. We are aiming to send home class groupings with report cards during Week 10. The process of developing classes is a multifaceted and exciting task. Because we try to make the best groupings possible it can take some planning and time. The following is a brief description of the steps that we take to formulate class groupings:
- Confirmation of the total student population for 2022. Sometimes this is hard to know depending on late transfers as families move in or out of the area.
- Determining the number of classes we are able to create depending on upon the number of teachers allocated to the school. We get indicative staffing numbers before the end of this year, but as always, Day 8 2022 numbers are the final determining factor.
- The school is divided into 4 sectors consisting of: Early Years Yrs P-2, Primary Yrs 3 to 6, Junior Secondary Yrs 7, 8, 9, 10 and Senior Secondary Yrs 11&12. In 2022, we are looking at Year 10 students remaining in Junior Secondary as per the Australian Curriculum guidelines and to enable our Yr 9 & 10 students the opportunity to select electives.
- We then create class groupings based on student’s educational and social emotional needs.
- Once classes are developed, we allocate staff to each class. This may be subject to change as staff may receive transfers in or out of the school. We also have teachers who relocate, retire, take family leave and some who are on contract whose contract simply comes to an end.
Learning to work with new teachers, new staff and new classmates each year is an important part of the school journey as our young people build resilience, learning to work with a wide variety of people (as they will in other areas of their life), build their network of familiar adults and learn to make new friends. As you can see there are a great many variables, most of which cannot be controlled. We ask for your patience and support as we work towards a successful transition to learning in 2022.
Hi everyone,
Term 4, Who can believe it? Teachers are finalising evidence and assessments to support report writing for the end of the school year, it is always pleasing to see how much students have learnt and grown over the year. Year 12 students are wrapping up their final days at school and preparing for their upcoming Graduation ceremony. Everyone is getting excited for the end of year activities, PBL rewards day and finding out about their classes and teachers for next year.
Earlier this year the department release an updated version of the P-12 Curriculum, assessment and reporting Framework (CARF), this framework guides all Queensland state school’s curriculum, assessment and reporting decision making to ensure alignment with policies and procedures in providing the Australian Curriculum to all students. You can access this document by clicking on this link https://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/stages-of-schooling/p-12.
To ensure alignment with the new CARF we have had to make some changes to the structure of our sectors for 2022. The CARF outlines minimum requirements for all students to access all 8 learning areas of the Australian Curriculum based on their chronological age, not operating level. The 8 learning areas are English, Mathematics, Health and Physical Education, Science, Technologies, The Arts, HASS and Languages. The two main decisions we have had to make are
- Students will access the Languages Curriculum: Japanese from their first year in the Primary Sector (Enrolled year 3 or 4). Japanese is the language that most schools in Gympie are teaching and assessing.
- Junior Secondary Sector will be divided into lower (years 7 and 8) and upper (years 9 and 10) to ensure that year 9’s and 10’s can access electives in Work Skills, The Arts, Technologies, HASS and Languages.
My door is always open if you would like to discuss these decisions, or any other curriculum related topics.
Miss Shellie
Early Years Sector News
Term 4 has begun and we are all busy working hard to learn all we need to. We are all enjoying exploring rhyme in English. It’s great when we notice words that rhyme and even better when we can find another word that rhymes too. In mathematics we are busy exploring location, counting and learning about time.
Our artistic sides are coming out as we organise our artworks for the art auction coming up later in the term.
On Wednesday of week 2 EY2 and EY3 went out for our Combined Day Trip. It was a great day. We had lots of fun riding our horses as we do each Wednesday at Gympie Riding for the Disabled. Then we went to Lake Alford All-Abilities Park for a play and a sausage sizzle. Much fun was had by all the students playing on the equipment. A big thank you to all the parents that came to join us.

With a sneak preview to DANCE last term, the students have plunged into DANCE full of enthusiasm and creativity this term. They are putting careful thought into their Australian Indigenous dance, their muscle warm-up movements, dance styles from the 1950s to today and their choice of a contemporary dance improvisation. A big thank you to Ms Jennie from EY3 for performing 2 Scottish highland jigs for JS3, and for giving us a tutorial for one of the jigs.

WOW hasn’t time flown by. I can’t believe it’s the end of the term already. What a busy term we have had.
In English we have looked at the books the muddled-up farm, where the pigs go moo and the sheep go quack, I want to be a movie star and listened, watched and danced to the old Broadway musical song” singing in the rain” and identified all the rhyming words we could hear.
In Maths, we have looked at positional and location words and are looking forward to an excursion to roadcraft to help us practice using words to describe our location.
For book week, Primary 1 looked at the book aliens love undies, Primary 2 looked at a non-fiction book about Harley Davidsons and Primary 3 looked at the book Shark in the loo. We also welcomed Mr Curtis from the Town library to read a few 2021 book of the year winners. We loved the book Collin Cockroach visits Caloundra by Sunny coast author Chris Mckimmie.
Kind regards,
HASS - Learning World News
Welcome back everyone. Students in all sectors are working hard towards assessment pieces and learning experiences. Early Year’s classes are now exploring their classroom features and what they like about other parts of the school, in particular their favourite, the playground. Primary students are exploring maps and mapping conventions with an introduction to world mapping. Secondary classes, too, are investigating the world through maps, the continents, oceans of the world and the parts of the globe. Year 11 students have embarked on an important journey to discover what it takes to be a leader, including the roles and responsibilities of school leadership positions. This will culminate in an election for the school leaders of 2022. Exciting times!

Miss A
Term 4 already. We have some fun days coming up over the next few weeks. Please refer to our sector calendar for details (especially dress up days.) Our students are busily planning artworks for the up-and-coming art exhibition and auction. Ms Deb is also producing some work at home. Watch this space, we are all a little excited!
Our English continues to put a smile on our dials as we conquer a new rhyming text each week. JS1 learners are becoming more familiar with identifying and creating rhyming text. Week 1 text was an adaptation of ‘Old MacDonald.’ The text ‘Old McDonald had a phone,’ explored not only rhyme but the overuse and impact of smart phones in our world in a most humorous way.
During maths, our learners are beginning to work independently in pairs to achieve their desired goals by playing games fairly. It is wonderful to see how far we have come during 2021. In addition, we have noticed the fair play has moved into the playground with students from Junior Secondary accepting everyone into a range of games from make believe to soccer.
Please remember with the hotter weather, students need to wear shorts or bring a spare pair in the bag along with their hat and water bottle.

Keep sun safe,
JS1 students, Darren, Dana, and Deb.
Junior Secondary 2 News
Who can believe that we are at the beginning of Week 3, in our final term for 2021? This term we welcome a work experience student, Zara, who is helping in our room each Monday. She has a very supportive manner and we look forward to her visits.
All students are working hard to complete their learning tasks and it’s wonderful to see how they enthusiastically start their morning routine, often without any prompting. Students sign in and create an ‘I feel’ statement, make a judgement about the day’s weather and complete 5-10 minutes of handwriting. As a whole class we read our Morning Message and discuss the missing punctuation. Following this we read a nonsense rhyme, looking at the rhyming pattern and sometimes chant it together! From Monday to Wednesday we finish this session by completing our onset/rime and phonics. We then move to the reading area where we read our Book of the Week and make our predictable chart sentences. These are cut up by the students and sequenced during the week, to be typed and illustrated to make our class book. We always enjoy reading these texts to our EY2 friends on Tuesday afternoons. The rest of our English session is spent in our groups doing reading comprehension and word knowledge learning and then, independent writing. We are proud of the learning gains made in our English and continue to strive to achieve our learning goals.
Hoping you all have a great term,
Libby, Michelle, Chris, and Kate.

Hello Parents and Carers,
Welcome to JS3’s first newsletter for term 4. We have been very busy settling back into the routines of the classroom and school. It is great to see all students eager and ready to do their best when completing their learning activities.
Our literacy this term continues on from last term, with the focus being rhyming sounds and words and we get to read some wonderful stories and listen to some poetry.

Our maths focus continues on with number recognition, counting, direction and position. We should be able to spend some fun maths time in the playground “in” the sand pit, “on” the swing and “under” the climbing log.
We have had a visitor to the class for some short “get to know you” sessions last week. His name is Jed, and his class mates have made him feel welcome. Jed starts with us this week so welcome to JS3 Jed.
Until next time, all the best
Gavin, Naomi and Dana.
Technologies
In early years we are continuing to explore apps on the iPads and interact with the robotic toys – Bee Botts and Photon. The students have also participated in making a Picture-Graph to represent data collected regarding people’s pets.
The rest of the school has been learning about data collection methods and the different ways that it can be represented depending on the goals and the audience. They have created their own chart, or data representation, using digital software and then emailed it to the teacher.
Students usually engage well with technology and many can even show the teacher a trick or two.

Senior School News
This week senior students have been very busy organising and preparing for up and coming events, including our Art Auction in week 8. Year 10 students have changed grouping with their elective subjects, including Health, PE, kitchen skills and gardening.
Yoga has been a big hit in PE, all students have been actively engaging and enjoying the challenges of ‘Brain Gym’.
Year 11 and 12 students are continuing to go to post school programs or work experience, including Victory Care Services. Endeavour have a disco coming up and students are welcome. A note has gone home about this event, it’s a great way to make community connections.
Our car washing program continues and students involved in Friday food will soon be cooking Christmas items, these programs have been very successful and all monies raised go directly into funding our programs.
In week 4, we have Daniel Morecombe day, we acknowledge this day by wearing red. On that day, we also have our splash and dash fun run, with the weather warming up, this should be a great event!

Best wishes
